GLW2201 : Mist Over Windermere

Tuesday 11th January 2022

It was a glorious day although we were surprised by the mist over Windermere as we dropped down to catch the ferry.

Fortunately it was lifting with just pockets hanging attractively.

Our plan was to walk northwards up the western bank then cut up through the trees over to one or other of the Sawreys before returning to the car.

We had brought a picnic and very nearly ate it in the car park but spotted a sunny place to eat by the side of the lake, quite idyllic.  The only thing disturbing the peace, though adding to the interest, was the repeated appearance of low flying aircraft.  Were they practising for Ukraine?  Or just a normal day’s training?  The quantity of planes of different shapes, some of which I am sure were not British, makes me suspect it was a serious exercise.

I received a rather strange phone call.  It was Emma asking if I was alright.  Apparently, without my knowledge, my phone had contacted here with photos of me plus brief recordings.  It seems I had inadvertently triggered an emergency call.  Later I discovered this happens if you press the on / off button three times in quick succession.  Be aware!

Our path took us north only to find it blocked by barriers erected because work was taking place clearing the trees that had fallen in the recent storm Arwen.

Fortunately, or so we thought, there was a path tracking gently back up the hill.

Unfortunately the storm had uprooted many of the trees and the way up was challenging at times.  We either had to creep under, climb through, or climb over to find a way round the blockages.  It was quite a challenge and each time we overcame an obstacle we had no idea as to how much worse the next was likely to be.  Would we have to retreat?

Fortunately we did not.   We emerged to a clear track with views over to the Coniston range.....

...... that led us to Far Sawrey and then round and down to the Claife Viewing Station.

The sun was lowering in the sky, subtly changing the views that we had enjoyed earlier.  Soon the mist would be starting to form again.
