GLW2213 : The Hunt For The Wind-blown Tree

Saturday 20th November 2022

A short outing to get a breath of fresh air whilst the sun was shining.  I wanted to try and reproduce one of Graham’s photos from his “Sea To The West” collection.

That meant Humphrey Head.  Parking was a bit tricky but we managed it then climbed the field up to the trig point.

The views all around Morecambe Bay were good, helped by the tide being out so the channels were clearly visible.

This is one of the best reward to effort ratio short walks.

Shooting into the sun gave quite a dramatic effect.

The hunt for Graham’s tree was initially a bit of a challenge until I noticed the fence in his picture.  That simplified things considerably.  Here's my version:

Not a bad effort, all things considered.  The lowering sun and the incoming cloud made the skies even more dramatic.

On the way back to the car we stood for a while and watched the plane ascending in large circles and then ejecting seven or eight parachutists, following which it did the same again.  As far as we could tell, all landed safely on the Cark airfield, avoiding the murmuration.

We then drove to the foot of the hill to have a pensioners’ lunch before setting off home.  We spotted a thick plume of smoke so decided to detour down a very narrow lane to rubber-neck what was happening.  It soon became clear that a barn was on fire.

As well as flames there were some very loud bangs- I don’t know what they had kept in there.  One fire engine had already arrived and there were two more on their way as we drove home.

That was quite enough excitement for one day!
